What is Legionnaires' disease?
Legionnaires' disease is a severe, often lethal, form of pneumonia. It's caused by the bacterium Legionella pneumophila found in both potable and non-potable water systems. Legionella pneumophila is spread by inhalation of contaminated droplets through activities such as showering. It mostly affects people with compromised immune systems, including cancer patients, people with chronic diseases and the elderly.
Each state and health department will deal with Legionella in a slightly different way. This site aims to give you more information about Legionella and other harmful bacteria.
